5 MINUTES WITH….Dr. Sharon Sharpe

Sharon described TEN THINGS SHE LEARNED WHILE HIKING THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL.

1) Hiking hurts. The guide book is Good!

2) When you cannot go on, take a break, then you will. Left, right, repeat….

3) Pack it in, pack it out.

4) Don’t forget the T.P.

5) Don’t dry a sports bra over an open fire.

6) Don’t camp under power lines.

7) You are never ‘there’ until you are there.

8) It it’s raining when you come to a shelter, it is not full until everyone is inside.

9) People are awesome.

10) Hike your own hike.

Speaker

Vinnie Tingley filling in for John Base, to speak about the Open Door meal.

The meal started in 1986 to serve the poor in the community a good hot dinner. They are served between September and June, every Thursday night. The original organizers were Megan Christopher and Tom Morrie. They did everything. The meal was served at St. Patrick Church. It has since grown to include everyone in the community. Joan and John Base got involved in 2003. Other volunteers include Ron Ordway.

Vinnie and Sally Tingley became involved two years ago to help John and Joan when they needed it. Rotary has participated since the 1990’s; Harriet Buckingham was a long time coordinator. In 2012 the Rotary Club donated a new stove in her memory. On March 3rd the major renovations will complete and the kitchen will be ready to serve folks for years to come.

Spread the word! Please let people know about Open Door.
