5 Minutes with a Rotarian: Verna Duffy

Verna spoke about her childhood spent on a cow farm in VT (now Stanford Valley Golf Course) with her parents and sister. She moved to Stanford, VT in 1946 and lived in a hired hands home on a farm. She discussed how she and her sister slept in an unfinished attic connected to a cow barn where they played, made recipes of blueberries and ground glass(!?!), and had free reign of the farm. It was a simple, but most pleasurable time in her life.

GUEST SPEAKER:

Marcie Bower, Stepping Stone Acupuncture & Wellness. Marcie spoke about how acupuncturists understand the human body. She mentioned five “windows” into the body, including: yin/yang; Qi and blood; Five Elements; Microsystems; and Balance Method.

Yin/Yang: two fundamental forces at work in the human body and in nature. When yin/yang is in balance, we are in a state of health.

Qi and Blood: Qi refers to energy that flows through meridians in our body. Diseases occur when there is not enough or too much Qi. Blood is the acupuncture sense and a deeper form of energy that flows through the meridians.

Five Elements: Marcie spoke about the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) and how the body is related. These elements interact with each other and provide the acupuncturist with info about how different systems in our bodies interact.

Microsystems: different parts of our body can be used to represent our whole body. For example, our ears and hands are connected to our whole body.

Balance Method: the whole body is connected by meridians of energy flow and certain parts of our body can be used to treat opposite or adjoining body parts.

Marcie’s presentation was fascinating to hear and learn about.

RAFFLE: Ben had the right ticket but pulled the 9 of hearts.

Respectfully submitted
